Davenport Evans is pleased to welcome its 2020 summer associate class, Kalen N. Frericks, Michael J. Mabee, Thomas P. Schartz, and Caleb M. Vukovich. Davenport Evans has a long history of hiring law students who participate in the firm’s summer associate program.

Kalen N. Frericks
Kalen N. Frericks attends the University of Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln, NE, and will graduate in May 2021. Kalen serves as the Allen Competition Chair on Moot Court Board, as a member of the National Moot Court Team, and as a teaching assistant to Prof. Steve Bradford for Business Associations. During the past two years she has been class president and class representative in the Student Bar Association, a student ambassador to the law school, social chair of the Environmental and Agricultural Law Society, and class representative and volunteer for the Community Legal Education Project, an organization that teaches the constitution to elementary and middle school students. Over the next year, Kalen will act as student attorney in the University’s Entrepreneurship Clinic. Originally from Northville, SD, Kalen received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with minors in Political Science and Criminology from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.

Michael J. Mabee
Michael J. Mabee attends the University of South Dakota School of Law (USD) and will graduate in May 2021. Michael serves as the Editor-in-Chief on Volume 66 of the South Dakota Law Review at USD. Michael’s article, “Healthcare Data Breaches in South Dakota: Post-Breach Legislation is Not Enough,” was selected for publication in Volume 65 Issue III of the South Dakota Law Review. Michael also assists Professors Wendy Hess and Michael McKey with the Fundamental Legal Skills course for all first-year law students at USD. Originally from Yankton, SD, Michael earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology Health Professions from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA.

Thomas P. Schartz
Thomas P. Schartz attends the University of South Dakota School of Law (USD) and will graduate in May 2021. Thomas competes nationally as a member of the Moot Court Board at USD. Thomas also serves as a research assistant for former Dean, Thomas Geu. He is a student member of the Native American Law Students Association and was previously the Vice Chairman of the Agricultural Law Society. Originally from Humboldt, SD, Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy and a minor in Business from South Dakota State University.

Caleb M. Vukovich
Caleb M. Vukovich attends the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City, IA, and just completed his 1L year. Caleb will serve as a research assistant for Associate Dean of Academic affairs, Bouma fellow in law, and Professor Emily Hughes throughout the 20/21 academic school year. Originally from Brookings, SD, Caleb received his Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in Legal Studies from South Dakota State University. During his time at SDSU he was involved in research with the Department of Economics and was a co-author for the publication “Effects of health-related claims on millennials’ willingness to pay for probiotics in the U.S.: Implications for regulation” in the Journal of Functional Foods. As well as working as a Financial Management Scholar at the FDIC. Additionally, Caleb enjoys cycling and running in his free time.
Davenport Evans seeks to provide summer associates a broad range of legal experience. Each summer associate works with supervising attorneys from the law firm’s litigation and business sections to help provide a realistic glimpse into the practice of law. Summer associates conduct research, draft substantive legal documents, and accompany attorneys on a variety of legal matters.
